Plantation Shutter Installation in Southport, NC

We recently installed custom plantation shutters throughout this traditional Southport, NC home as part of an extensive interior renovation.
Project Overview
This Southport home has great traditional “bones” and a fantastic location near the ferry landing, with wonderful views of Bald Head Island.
When we first met the owner, the bedroom and office windows already had plantation shutters with 2½-inch louvers, two panels per window and traditional tilt rods. The shutters suited the home when it was originally built, but the new owner was undertaking a long-term project to modernize the interior.
The living and dining rooms had cellular shades, creating a noticeably different look from the plantation shutters elsewhere in the home. As part of the renovation, the owner wanted a more consistent, updated appearance throughout the house.
The options were:
-
Keep the existing 2½" louver shutters and add matching shutters to the living and dining room windows.
-
Replace the existing 2½" louver shutters with cellular shades to match the living and dining rooms.
-
Replace the existing shutters with single-panel shutters featuring 4½" louvers and hidden louver controls to create a cleaner, more contemporary look consistent with the owner's vision for the home.
The homeowner chose the third option: replace the existing shutters and cellular shades with a new plantation shutter design that would create a consistent, updated look throughout the home.

The Result
The new single-panel shutters with 4½-inch louvers and Ultra-View louver control gave the owner the updated appearance she wanted while preserving the functionality she loved about plantation shutters:
-
Flexible light control throughout the day
-
Independent upper and lower louver control for privacy and natural light at the same time
-
Ability to reduce direct sunlight on furniture and flooring
But now those benefits come in a cleaner, more contemporary design that complements the owner's vision for the home.
Compared with the original 2½-inch, two-panel shutters with traditional tilt rods, the new design creates fewer visual obstructions, cleaner lines and a more open view through the windows.
