Plantation Shutters, roller shades and Bahama Shutters in Southport, nc

IMG_2557.jpeg

We recently installed custom plantation shutters, roller shades and Bahama shutters in this Southport, NC home, using three different window-treatment solutions to address the homeowner's specific needs for privacy, light control and exterior style.

Project Overview

This Southport home has large windows that bring abundant natural light into the interior. After a new home was built next door, the homeowner's primary concern became privacy, particularly in the primary bedroom and sun porch facing the neighboring property.

The homeowner wanted window treatments that would provide flexible privacy and light control without sacrificing the natural light that makes these rooms so inviting.

We designed, manufactured and installed a combination of custom plantation shutters, roller shades and Bahama shutters, selecting each product for the specific windows and needs of this home.

Plantation Shutter Details

We installed custom Anthracite Black plantation shutters in the primary bedroom to provide greater privacy from the newly built neighboring home while maintaining flexible control over natural light.

  • 4 1/2-inch louvers for greater visibility with less obstruction

  • Ultra-View louver control for a clean appearance

  • Split tilt provides the same independent upper and lower louver control as a divider rail, but with a cleaner, uninterrupted appearance

  • anthracite black paint color

  • Inside mount to highlight the window trim

  • Hybrid construction combines a solid wood frame with poly louvers for a premium appearance and excellent resistance to humidity, salt air and UV rays

Roller Shade Details

We installed light-filtering roller shades on the sunroom to create a lighter, more organic feel than plantation shutters would have provided. Roller shades also allowed us to mount each shade below the transom windows.  Doing this allowed the homeowner to only extend them to the lower parting rail or to pull them all the way down to the floor.  This provides flexible privacy and light control while preserving the architectural details of the windows.

  • 3-inch flat, fabric-covered cassettes for a clean, tailored appearance

  • Fabric-wrapped hembars allow a consistent appearance from top to bottom

  • soft-touch cordless operation for effortless control

  • light filtering fabric provides privacy while still allowing soft light

  • Sorrento Linen fabric provides a light, natural and organic appearance

  • Mounting below the transoms preserves architectural integrity

  • The shades can be extended below the lower parting rail to the floor for total privacy when desired.

Bahama Shutter Details

Initially, we installed a Bahama shutter at the end of the front porch to provide separation from the neighboring property while still allowing airflow. Because the porch has both eastern and western sun exposure, the shutter also helps reduce direct morning and afternoon sunlight. The homeowners were so pleased with the result that they decided to add Bahama shutters to the west-facing sunroom.

  • 2-inch louvers provide visibility and airflow while adding privacy

  • Fixed support arms create a clean architectural appearance

  • Textured matte black finish provides a softer, more organic appearance than a gloss finish

Why Plantation Shutters Work Well in Southport

Homes in Southport are exposed to strong sunlight, humidity and coastal conditions. The hybrid plantation shutters selected for this project offer several practical benefits that are well suited to this environment.

Benefits include:

  • Split-tilt control provides flexible privacy while still allowing natural light

  • Adjustable louvers help manage direct sunlight throughout the day

  • Poly louvers provide added resistance to humidity and warping

  • Easy maintenance and cleaning

The Result

The combination of three different window-treatment solutions addressed the homeowner's needs in different areas of the property:

  • In the primary bedroom, the Anthracite Black plantation shutters provide privacy from the newly built neighboring home while split tilt allows independent control of the upper and lower louvers.

  • In the sunroom, the light-filtering roller shades provide flexible privacy while maintaining the lighter, more organic appearance the homeowners wanted.

  • The roller shades can be lowered only to the parting rail or extended all the way to the floor depending on the amount of privacy desired.

  • On the front porch, the Bahama shutter provides separation from the neighboring property while maintaining airflow and helping reduce direct morning and afternoon sunlight.

  • The west-facing sunroom had previously become too hot for the homeowners to comfortably use for entertaining. After adding the Bahama shutters, they told us the reduced heat allowed them to use the space as intended for entertaining.
