the challenge

we began working with The owner of this new custom home in ocean ridge long before construction was completed.  The owner was retiring from new york to brunswick county.  they were still living in new york at the time, so initial communication was handled remotely via email and video conference.  using our extensive library of images from projects we've completed over the years, we worked with the customer to define their vision.  Once their vision was clearly understood, we were able to propose solutions tailored specifically to their needs.

 

since the owner was retiring to the area, the goal was to create a clean, bright, timeless look with minimal maintenance requirements.  The solutions needed to preserve as much natural light as possible while providing privacy and effective control of glare and heat - all without obstructing the wooded and coastal views that make Ocean Ridge Plantation such a desirable place to live.  critical to the project was minimal obstruction of the beautiful views that make coastal North Carolina so special.

The specific requirements of this job presented a unique challenge:

• The classic coastal look of plantation shutters

• Room-darkening capability in the bedrooms for better sleep

• A solution for the large sunroom that would reduce summer heat while allowing warmth from the sun during colder months

• Shutters for the garage that could withstand a non-climate-controlled environment

• shutters on the doors that would accommodate decorative lever locks and an electronic deadbolt

• A smooth installation process completed before the homeowners' move-in date

Our Solution

We measured every opening individually so each shutter could be built for the dimensions, trim, and mounting conditions of that specific window.

​

Throughout the home, 3½-inch louvers and Ultra-View hidden louver controls created the clean, uncluttered appearance the homeowners wanted. Divider rails allow the upper and lower sections to operate independently, providing flexible control over natural light and privacy.

​

In the bedrooms, the shutters provide the room-darkening capability the homeowners wanted for sleeping. In the sunroom, we installed one shutter panel per window while leaving the transoms uncovered, preserving natural light and the views while giving the homeowners control over glare and solar heat gain.

For the garage, we used hybrid construction with kiln-dried hardwood frames and solid polymer louvers. This combination provides added resistance to the heat and humidity extremes found in a non-climate-controlled space.

The door shutters required additional customization. We notched the shutters around the decorative lever hardware and electronic deadbolt, allowing the homeowners to keep the hardware they selected while achieving the finished look they envisioned.

Every shutter was installed before the homeowners' move-in date, allowing the window treatments to be completed and ready when they arrived at their new Ocean Ridge Plantation home.

The Result

The finished project gave the homeowners exactly what they envisioned for both their windows and doors. With every shutter installed before their move-in date, their new home was ready for them from day one.

 

The shutters created the bright, refined appearance they wanted while providing the privacy, light control, durability, and low-maintenance performance that were important to them.

• Throughout the home, the shutters complement the architectural details of each window and create a consistent look from room to room.

• In the sunroom, the uncovered transoms preserve abundant natural light while the shutters below provide control over glare, privacy, and solar heat gain.

• On the doors, custom notching allowed the homeowners to keep their electronic deadbolt and decorative lever hardware without compromising the finished appearance of the shutters.

• In the garage, hybrid shutter construction provides added durability for the heat and humidity of a non-climate-controlled space.

The homeowners were especially pleased with the consistent appearance throughout their new home and the custom door shutters that allowed them to keep the electronic lock and decorative hardware they had selected.
